    How the rent is split

    The rent is cut in two. The shared part — set with the slider, 30% to start — pays for the space everyone uses: kitchen, living room, bathroom, hallway. It is split equally between all the people in the flat. The rest is split between the rooms in proportion to their area.

    Each room’s part is then split equally between the people living in it, so a couple sharing the big room splits that room’s part, and each of them still pays a full person’s share of the common space.

    Everything is worked out in whole cents (or whole drams). When something doesn’t divide evenly, the leftover cent goes to the first person in the list, so the shares always add up to exactly the rent. Nothing you type leaves this page.

    Short answers

    What share should the shared space be?

    Many flats land between 20% and 40%. A good starting point is the shared area as a share of the whole flat: if the kitchen, living room and bathroom are a third of the floor space, try 33%.

    How are two people in one room handled?

    The room’s part is split between them equally, and each of them pays a full share of the shared space, because both use the kitchen and the bathroom.

    What about a private bathroom or a balcony?

    The calculator only knows area. Add the balcony or en-suite to that room’s area, or agree on a small adjustment and move it between people afterwards.

    Does it matter whether I use m² or sq ft?

    No. Only the proportions between rooms matter, so any unit gives the same result as long as every room uses the same one.
