How the bill split calculator works

Add everyone who shared the costs, then each expense: what it was, how much, who paid, and who it was for. An expense is split equally between only the people it was for. When it doesn’t divide evenly, the leftover cent goes to the first of them in your list, so every split adds back to the exact amount.

For each person the calculator adds up what they paid and what their share came to. The difference is their balance: plus means the group owes them, minus means they owe the group. All the balances together always come to zero.

To settle, the person who owes the most pays the person who is owed the most — as much as one of them needs to reach zero — and that repeats until everyone is even. It never takes more than one transfer fewer than the number of people, usually far fewer than paying back each expense separately. Nothing you type leaves this page.

      Short answers

Does this calculator save or send what I type?

No. It runs entirely in your browser: nothing is sent anywhere or stored, and closing the page clears it.

What happens to an amount that doesn’t divide evenly?

€100 between three people is €33.34, €33.33 and €33.33. The extra cent goes to whoever is first in the people list among those the expense was for, so the parts always add up to the total.

Why are there fewer transfers than expenses?

Only each person’s overall balance matters, not the order things were paid in. Matching the biggest debt with the biggest credit settles the whole group in at most one transfer fewer than the number of people.

      Can I mix currencies?

Not here: one calculation uses one currency, with no conversion. The kisir app takes any currency per expense, fills in today’s exchange rate, and lets you change the rate to what your bank actually charged.

Splitting a whole trip, not one bill?

In kisir everyone adds expenses from their own phone as they happen, balances update for the whole group, and the fewest-transfers plan is always ready. Free, no account.
