A Splitser (WieBetaaltWat) alternative, compared fairly

Splitser, sold as WieBetaaltWat in the Netherlands, is a capable group expense app with iDEAL and Bancontact payments built in. If you want something that needs no account to join, runs without ads and has no payment fees, kisir is an alternative. If you want in-app payments or receipt photos, Splitser is the better fit.

People search for a Splitser alternative for different reasons: they want to try something with fewer steps, they have friends outside the Netherlands, or they simply want to compare before choosing. This page sets Splitser (also known as WieBetaaltWat) next to kisir. Everything about Splitser comes from its own website, FAQ and App Store listing, read on the date above. Apps change, so check the current listing before you decide.

Short answer

Splitser is a mature, popular app with features kisir does not have: payments inside the app through Dutch and Belgian methods, receipt photos, recurring expenses, a web version and PDF or CSV export. kisir is the lighter option: nobody creates an account, it has no ads, and recording a payment costs nothing because kisir never handles money.

Neither is “better” overall. It depends on how your group pays each other and who is in it.

What Splitser does well

  • Payments in the app. If your group is in the Netherlands or Belgium, paying through iDEAL or Bancontact from the same screen that shows the balance is a real convenience, and kisir has nothing like it.
  • More ways to record an expense. Photo of the receipt, categories and recurring expenses suit a shared household with monthly costs.
  • A web version. Useful if someone prefers a laptop.
  • Track record. Its App Store listing shows a 4.9 rating and describes Dutch finance-app awards; its site reports over 5 million accounts.
  • Dutch-language support through WieBetaaltWat.

What kisir does differently

  • No account. One person creates the group and shares a link, QR code or six-character code. Everyone else types a name. An optional email only restores your groups on a new phone.
  • No fees and no ads. kisir does not move money, so there is nothing to charge for. Payments are recorded, with an optional note, and the group closes itself when every balance is zero.
  • Currency control. Each expense can be in its own currency. kisir fills in today’s exchange rate, and you can change it to what your bank charged. The ledger shows both figures.
  • Trust features. Every expense has a history of who changed what, and only the person who added it can edit or delete it.
  • Armenian and Russian, which Splitser’s site does not list.

Who each app fits

Splitser fits you if your group is Dutch or Belgian, you want to pay and request money in the app, you want receipt photos or monthly recurring costs, or you like having a web version.

kisir fits you if your group is mixed (friends abroad, relatives, a one-off trip) and you want everyone in within a minute with no sign-up, you pay by whatever method you already use, and you want free export and no ads.

If half the group already uses Splitser, don’t run two ledgers for one trip. Pick the app everyone can join and finish the trip in it. Our guide to the best apps to split expenses covers the wider field.

Settling up in either app

Both apps compute the fewest payments needed. For a trip where Ana is owed €217.60 and Leo, Mia and Karen owe €60.80, €14.40 and €142.40, that is three payments, not six. How those payments happen is the difference: Splitser can route them through its payment methods, while kisir records that you paid and then closes the group. See how to settle up in the fewest transfers for the method.

Switching without losing anything

We found no import from one app into the other. Settle the existing list where it lives, then start your next trip or flat-share month in the new app.
