SplitMyExpenses alternative: a free app where nobody signs up

SplitMyExpenses is a capable bill-splitting app with web, iPhone and Android versions, receipt scanning and a paid Premium plan. If you want an app where friends join by link or code and just pick a name, kisir is one alternative, and it is free.

People searching for a SplitMyExpenses alternative usually fall into two camps. Some want fewer steps for the friends they are splitting with. Others want a different mix of features. This page compares the two apps fairly so you can tell which camp you are in. Everything about SplitMyExpenses below comes from its own website and App Store listing as they read on October 17, 2026. Apps change, so check the current listings before you decide.

What SplitMyExpenses does well

It is a broad product, and for some groups that is exactly the point.

  • A web app as well as phone apps. If someone in the group would rather open a laptop, it has you covered.
  • More ways to split. Its site lists equal, by amount, percentage, shares, adjustments and itemization.
  • Receipt itemization. On Premium, you upload a photo and it itemizes the receipt so items can be split individually. For a shared grocery run or a restaurant bill where everyone ordered differently, that saves real typing.
  • Recurring expenses. Rent, subscriptions and utilities can repeat on a schedule. Its pricing page lists a limit of 10 on the free plan.
  • Importing and linked accounts. It can import from CSV, Excel or text files, and Premium can link bank and card accounts.
  • Payment-app hand-off. Its site mentions settling through Venmo, PayPal, Cash App and Zelle.
  • Charts of spending by category and of debts.
  • A clear stance on the free tier. Its FAQ says the core of splitting and settling up will always be free.

Where the two differ

Accounts and joining

This is the biggest practical difference. At the time of writing, SplitMyExpenses’ website tells new users to register, and says friends invited to a group register to get started. For a regular flat or a close group that is a one-time cost. For a one-off trip, a parent, or a friend in another country, it can be the step where someone drops out and you end up keeping the numbers yourself.

kisir has no account at all. Create a group, share a link, QR code or six-character code, and everyone picks a display name. Someone who refuses to install anything can be added by name and is still in every split.

Currencies

Both apps handle trips across borders. SplitMyExpenses lists support for over 150 currencies, and its App Store listing places automatic currency conversion under Premium. kisir lets any expense be in any currency, fills in today’s central-bank or market mid rate, converts to the group’s currency, and lets you type the rate your bank actually charged. The ledger shows both figures. If you travel a lot, see our guide to splitting expenses in multiple currencies.

Offline

Neither of the SplitMyExpenses pages we checked describes an offline mode, though its release notes mention recovery after going offline. kisir lets you add, edit and delete expenses with no connection and syncs them later, which helps on ferries, mountains and roaming-free trips.

Settling up

Both split the final bill into few payments. kisir shows your own share of the fewest-transfers plan, and you record what you sent in one tap. When every balance is zero, the group closes itself. For how that works, see settling up with the fewest transfers.

Price

SplitMyExpenses has a free plan and a Premium plan, listed on the App Store as a monthly or yearly subscription. Premium is where receipt scanning, bank imports and higher recurring limits live. kisir is free with no ads and no subscription, and has none of those features.

Who each app fits

SplitMyExpenses fits a group that wants receipts itemized, recurring bills, percentage splits, a web app, or bank and card imports, and where everyone is happy to register.

kisir fits a trip, a flat, a dinner or an event where people should join in under a minute without an account, where someone may not have the app, where there may be no signal, or where the group is Armenian- or Russian-speaking. It does not scan receipts, itemize a bill, handle recurring expenses, link to banks, move money or run on the web, so if you need any of those, SplitMyExpenses is the better fit.

Whichever you choose, pick one app per group. Two ledgers for the same trip is the one setup guaranteed to cause an argument. For a wider look, see our roundup of the best apps to split expenses, or compare with a Splitwise alternative with no account.

Short answers

Is there a free alternative to SplitMyExpenses?

Yes. SplitMyExpenses has a free plan of its own, and its site says core bill splitting and settling up will always be free. kisir is another free option: no ads, no subscription, unlimited groups and people, and no account to create.

Do I need an account to use SplitMyExpenses?

At the time of writing, its website sends you to a registration page, and says friends invited by link register to get started. kisir works the other way: you pick a display name and join by link, QR code or six-character code.

Does kisir scan receipts like SplitMyExpenses Premium?

No. kisir does not scan receipts, itemize a bill line by line or handle recurring expenses. If you split receipts item by item or run monthly bills, SplitMyExpenses covers that and kisir does not.

Can I use kisir in a browser?

No. kisir runs on iPhone and Android only. SplitMyExpenses also has a web app, which matters if some of your group wants a laptop.

Can I move my SplitMyExpenses data into kisir?

There is no import. The simplest path is to settle the old group where it is and start the next trip or month in the new app.
