A Spliit alternative: Spliit vs kisir, side by side

Spliit is a free, open-source web app for sharing expenses, and it needs no account. If you want a native Android app, offline logging or an in-app settle-up record, kisir is a free alternative with the same no-account idea. Spliit has features kisir lacks, listed below.

If you search for a Spliit alternative, you probably like what Spliit does: a free expense splitter where nobody signs up. Spliit is a good example of that idea. This page compares it fairly with kisir, which takes the same no-account approach but with a different set of features. Facts about Spliit come from its own website, blog and GitHub page, checked on 17 October 2026, and may have changed since.

What is Spliit?

Spliit describes itself as open source and free forever, and its repository says it is a free and open source alternative to Splitwise. At the time of writing, it is under the MIT license, the official instance runs at spliit.app, and you can host it yourself, for example with Docker. Its site lists groups for a trip or an event, categories, receipt images, advanced splits by percentage, shares or amount, balances, and “reimbursements” that optimize transfers between people. It also lists an AI receipt scan (marked beta) and recurring expenses.

On accounts, Spliit’s blog says it has no sign-up form, no password and no user database. A group creator shares a link, and each person opens it and picks their name. The same post is open about the trade-off: the link is the access control, and a new device starts empty until you reopen your links.

Spliit says it is available in 24 languages and that its iPhone app (version 2.0) was rewritten in SwiftUI and is free on the App Store. The blog states the iPhone app requires iOS 26 and that an Android version is not built yet.

Where Spliit is the better fit

  • You want to run it yourself. Open source with a Docker image and a one-click deploy means you control the data and the server. kisir does not offer this.
  • You scan receipts. Spliit can create an expense from a receipt photo, and it lists categories and attached images. kisir does not scan receipts or itemize a bill.
  • You have regular costs. Recurring expenses are on Spliit’s homepage feature list (check whether your version has them). kisir does not handle recurring expenses.
  • You split by percentage. Spliit offers percentage splits; kisir offers Equal, Shares or exact Amounts.
  • You want many interface languages. Spliit lists 24.
  • You prefer a browser. A website that works on any computer is simple to share. kisir does not run on the web.

Where kisir may fit better

  • A native Android app. kisir ships on both iPhone and Android.
  • Logging with no signal. On a ferry or a mountain, kisir lets you add, edit and delete expenses offline; they sync later.
  • Fixing the exchange rate. Each expense can be in its own currency, filled with the day’s mid-market rate, and you can change it to what your card actually charged. The ledger shows both figures.
  • Joining by QR or code. Six characters read aloud works at a dinner table.
  • A paper trail. Every expense has a history of who changed what, only its creator can edit or delete it, and members get notifications.
  • Closing the books. Record the payments you have sent, and when every balance reaches zero the group closes itself.

Which should you choose?

Choose Spliit if you want a free open-source web app, you scan receipts, or you want to host it yourself. Choose kisir if you need an Android app, offline entry, or the rate-editing and one-tap settle-up described above. Both skip the account step, which is what usually stalls a group.

Two ledgers for one trip cause arguments, so pick one app per group and stay with it. If you are switching mid-way, settle the old group where it lives and start the next trip in the new app. For a longer list of options, see the best apps to split expenses.

What kisir does not do: scan receipts, itemize a bill line by line, handle recurring expenses, connect to banks or cards, move money, set budgets or run on the web. Payments happen however you normally pay each other; kisir records them.

Short answers
