kisir vs Splitwise, side by side
Splitwise is the established choice, with receipt scanning, recurring bills, a web app and many currencies. kisir is a newer, free app where nobody needs an account and which covers the core of group splitting. Which is better depends on what your group needs.
If you are weighing kisir against Splitwise, the honest summary is this: both split shared expenses, track who owes whom and simplify the payments at the end. Splitwise has more features. kisir asks less of the people in the group. This page lays the two side by side so you can pick on facts. The statements about Splitwise come from its own website and store listings as of 17 October 2026, and may change.
If sign-up is your main concern, there is a separate page on that: a Splitwise alternative with no account. This one covers everything else.

Joining a group and the account question
kisir has no accounts. One person creates a group and shares a link, QR code or six-character code, and everyone else picks a display name. An optional email exists only to restore your groups on a new phone.
Splitwise works through accounts. Its help center says a current member invites you by email, phone number or an invite link, and that following the link means logging into your Splitwise account. That is a normal design, and it gives you a persistent identity across groups and friends. It is also one more step for a relative or a friend abroad.
For people who will not install anything, kisir lets you add them by name and include them in every split.
Splits and settling up
Both apps handle the splits a real group needs: equal, by shares, by exact amounts, with more than one payer. Splitwise also splits by percentage. In kisir the editor will not save an expense until the amounts add up.
At the end, both reduce the number of payments needed. kisir shows each member “Your plan”, their share of the fewest-transfers settlement, and lets you record the payment in one tap. When every balance is zero the group closes itself. Splitwise offers debt simplification and lets you record cash payments, or use payment integrations where they are available. For how the fewest-payments maths works, see how to settle up with the fewest transfers.
kisir records payments but does not move money or send payment requests. If you want to settle through Venmo or PayPal from inside the app, that is a Splitwise strength in the countries where it is offered.
Currencies
Both apps let you log an expense in a different currency from the group’s. In kisir, every expense can be in any currency; the app fills in today’s exchange rate, converts to the group’s currency, and you can change the rate to what your bank actually charged. The ledger shows both figures. In Splitwise, expenses in any currency are free according to its App Store listing, while its Pro tier lists currency conversion. See splitting expenses in multiple currencies for how to handle the rate yourself.
Where Splitwise does more
To be clear about it, Splitwise has features kisir does not:
- Receipt scanning and itemizing, listed under Pro
- Recurring expenses
- A web app
- Charts, graphs and expense search (Pro)
- Payment integrations and, in some markets, transaction import
If your group splits a restaurant bill line by line from a photo, pays rent on a schedule, or wants to use a laptop, Splitwise is the better fit.
Where kisir may suit you better
- Nobody in the group wants to create an account.
- You want it free, with no ads and no subscription tier to think about.
- You travel and want the exchange rate filled in and editable for each expense.
- You want an edit history on every expense, and only the person who added it can change it.
- Armenian or Russian is the language people actually use.
Which one should you pick?
Pick Splitwise if your group already uses it, you want the extras above, or you need the web app. Pick kisir if the group is mixed, short-lived or international, and you want people in quickly with nothing to sign up for. Whichever you choose, choose one for the whole group. Two ledgers for one trip is how arguments start. For a trip setup in either app, see how to split costs on a group trip.
Splitwise’s prices, limits and features change, and some are not published on its website. Before you decide, read its current App Store or Google Play listing.
