Splitting expenses on the iPhone Duo: kisir now uses both halves of the screen
Open an iPhone Duo and kisir shows a group's balances on the left half and every expense on the right, split on the fold. Close it and you're back to the usual tabs, on the same screen. Here is why we built it that way.
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable: it opens like a book, with an inner screen of about 7.6 inches and an outer one of about 5.4. Since version 1.1.4, kisir uses the inner screen as two pages instead of one big phone screen.
The question at the end of every trip
When a trip ends, everyone opens the group and asks the same thing: “Why do I owe that much?”
On a normal phone, the answer is in two places. The balance is on one tab and the expenses are on the other, so you go back and forth: Levon is down €29.20, switch to Expenses, scroll, find the dinner he wasn’t at, switch back. It works, but you lose your place every time, and in a group chat that’s where the doubt starts.
On the open Duo, both are on the screen at once. The balances and Your plan (your part of the fewest payments that settle the group) stay on the left. The expense list sits on the right, with the same All / Paid by me / For me filters. Tap For me and the right half shows only the expenses you were part of, while the number you’re checking stays in view on the left.
That’s the whole idea. Nothing is hidden behind an extra tap, and you can check a balance against the expenses behind it without leaving the screen.
Settling up, on one screen
In the demo group above, the plan says Levon pays me €22.00, and the right half shows why: dinner, the taxi from the airport, groceries, all with who paid and who they were for. When he pays, I mark it received, and the group updates on both halves.
When every balance is zero, the group closes itself, as it does on any phone. On the Duo you also see the last payments that closed it right next to the zeros, which is a nice way to end a trip.
Close it, and you’re on the same screen
Fold the Duo shut and kisir goes back to the phone layout with its two tabs, Overview and Expenses, right away and without reopening the group. You stay where you were. Open it again and the two halves come back.
We also kept the buttons clear of the Duo’s camera pill, so nothing you need to tap sits under it, open or closed.
Not only the Duo
The same two-pane view turns on for wide Android foldables and tablets, so a group looks the same on a big screen whichever phone your friends carry. Everything else is the kisir you know:
- No sign-up for anyone. Pick a name and join by link, QR code or a six-character code. Friends without the app can be added by name.
- Any currency per expense, with today’s rate filled in and the option to change it to what your bank charged.
- The fewest payments that settle the whole group, recorded in one tap.
- Works offline, and syncs when you’re back online.
- Free: no ads, no subscription, 20 languages.
What it doesn’t do
The bigger screen doesn’t add features. kisir still doesn’t scan receipts, connect to your bank or move money, and there is no web version. It just puts the two things you check when you settle up next to each other.
If you have a Duo or an Android foldable and something looks wrong on it, write to support@kisir.am. A screenshot helps.
The groups in the screenshots are demo groups; the names and amounts are made up.
Settle your next trip on one screen
kisir is free on iPhone and Android, with no sign-up. Open a group on the Duo and the balances and expenses sit side by side.
