A ski weekend with friends: how to split the chalet, fuel and lift passes
A ski trip has three kinds of cost: the chalet everyone shares, the car some people shared, and the lift pass only you used. Splitting ski trip costs is easy once each expense goes to the right people.
Ski weekends produce an unusual mix: one big shared expense booked months ahead, a handful of medium ones paid on the road, and a lot of personal ones that look shared because they were bought together. Keep the three apart and the weekend settles in minutes.
Three kinds of cost
Shared by everyone. The chalet, the group dinner, the firewood. Split by person, or by couple if couples share a room; decide before booking.
Shared by some. Fuel and tolls are shared by the people in that car, not by the group. Two cars, two expenses, two sets of people. The same for the taxi from the station.
Personal, bought together. Lift passes, a lesson, rented skis. One person often pays for all of them at the counter because it is faster. That is still personal: log it with exactly the people whose pass it was, and it never touches the people who hiked instead.
Six people, worked through
Six friends, one chalet at €900, so €150 each. Two cars: Jonas drives three people and pays €84 for fuel, €28 each; Lea drives the other three, €60, €20 each. Saturday dinner, paid by Mira, €162 for six, €27 each. Jonas also pays for four lift passes at the counter, €200, for the four people who skied: €50 each.
| Expense | Paid by | Amount | Shared by | Each |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chalet | Sam | €900 | all six | €150 |
| Fuel, car 1 | Jonas | €84 | Jonas, Mira, Tom | €28 |
| Fuel, car 2 | Lea | €60 | Lea, Sam, Nina | €20 |
| Dinner | Mira | €162 | all six | €27 |
| Lift passes | Jonas | €200 | Jonas, Mira, Tom, Lea | €50 |
Nina and Sam did not ski, so the passes never appear on their lines. Each person’s share is the sum of their column; each person’s balance is what they paid minus that. The group then settles with the biggest debtor paying the biggest creditor, at most five transfers for six people, and usually fewer. The method is in settling up with the fewest transfers.
The chalet booked months ago
The person who paid the deposit in October is owed it in February. Log the booking as an expense on the day it is paid, with everyone on it, so it is in the list from the start and not a surprise at the end. If someone drops out, splitting a holiday rental with friends covers what happens to their share.
Settle on Sunday night
Not “next week”. The chalet owner has been paid, the cars are full of wet gloves, everyone is in one room for the last time. Ten minutes, two or three transfers each, done.
How we do it in kisir
One group for the weekend, joined by link in the chat in October when the chalet is booked. The deposit goes in that day. On the mountain, with no signal, Jonas adds the lift passes with the four skiers on them and it syncs in the valley. On Sunday night the Overview shows every balance and each person’s own transfers; everyone sends theirs and records it, and the group closes at zero.
Add it in the lift queue
kisir needs no account and works with no signal on the mountain. Everyone adds what they paid; Sunday night shows who pays whom.
