A family holiday with parents who won’t install an app

Three generations in one villa, and at least two of them will not download anything for a week’s holiday. You can still split family vacation costs fairly: add them by name, keep one list, and settle once at the end.

Family trips have a money problem that friends’ trips do not: half the group will never open the app. Your parents are happy to see the numbers but not to create a login. Your brother’s teenager has a phone but is not going to track a dinner. So the organiser pays, tracks nothing, and at the end nobody knows whether the parents were overcharged or undercharged, and nobody asks.

Two decisions before you book

Who counts as a unit? A couple is usually one unit for the villa and the car. Count units for the big shared costs and people for meals, or count people for everything. Either is fine; decide it before the first payment, and say it.

What do the parents pay? Many families want the parents to pay nothing, or only their share of the villa. That is a generous decision and a good one, but it is a decision, so make it out loud. “Mum and Dad are our guests this week” settles more arguments than any app.

The villa, worked through

Six people: you and your partner, your sister and her husband, and your parents. The villa is €1,200 for the week, split by person: €200 each, so €400 per couple. You paid it when booking.

Your sister pays for the big grocery shop, €180, shared by six: €30 each. Your parents pay for a dinner out, €240, shared by six: €40 each.

PaidShareBalance
You and partner€1,200€540+€660
Sister and husband€180€540−€360
Parents€240€540−€300

Two transfers settle the week: your sister sends you €360, your parents send €300. If the family decided the parents are guests, their dinner is a gift and is not logged, and the villa and groceries, €1,380, are shared by the two couples: €690 each. Your sister paid €180, so she sends you €510, and the parents send nothing. Both are fair. The point is to have chosen.

Splitting a holiday rental with friends covers the harder cases: people who arrive late, the cleaning fee, the deposit.

Keep it to one settlement

With family, settle once, at the end. A running list of small debts between siblings all week is tiring, and parents find it strange. One number per household on the last evening, sent before everyone flies home, and the holiday is clean.

How we do it in kisir

One person makes the group. The siblings who have the app join by link. The parents and the teenager are added by name: they are in every expense you put them on, their balance shows like everyone else’s, and they never touch a phone. At the end you show your mother her line, she sends it (or does not, if she is a guest), and you mark it received. The group closes itself when every balance is zero.

One list for the whole family

In kisir, people without the app are added by name and are in every split. No account for anyone, free, on iPhone and Android.
